Project Title
Estimation of exacerbation rates among children with mild asthma (to inform stage 3 internal pilot of the ASYMPTOMATIC trial)
Lay summary
We want to find out how many children need to join the ASYMPTOMATIC trial. This trial is testing if children with mild asthma should use their steroid inhaler every day or only when they have symptoms. At first, it was estmated that about 18 out of 100 children would have an asthma attack in a year. But new information shows this number might be lower. If fewer children have attacks, the trial will not need as many children recruited to the trial. To confirm this, we need data to see how many children have at least one asthma attack in a year. This will help calcuate the right number of children to include in the trial.
Public benefit statement
The ASYMPTOMATIC trial wants to find the best way for children and young people with asthma to use their preventer inhaler. Right now, in the UK, they are told to use it every day. This seems to help stop asthma attacks, but some children with mild asthma might not need it every day.

They could perhaps instead use a corticosteroid inhaler only on days when they have asthma symptoms, such as cough, wheeze, or shortness of breath.
