How the public are involved with the SDE

We are committed to strong public involvement across our work.

This first started with focus groups across Our region, covering research and specifically understanding public views on data use.

The Public Advisory and Accountability Group and Data Access Committees will take this work forward and support the North West SDE to meet its values and objectives, whilst adhering to the “Five Safes Framework”.

How public involvement works

We have blended the NHS, National Institute for Health Research and Public Engagement in Data Research Initiative (PEDRI) approaches to public engagement.

This can be summarised as five distinct parts:

  • high-quality community engagement with many different communities.
  • deep analysis of that engagement to build new ideas.
  • including staff and senior leaders in the above so they really understand.
  • making commitments to public issues and priorities.
  • feeding back progress, delays, success or failure with making those commitments.

We believe that our public engagement is only as good as the weakest link in the chain. So we make effects to properly resource and consider each part to maximise public input and its value.
