M-RIC/SDE linkage Proof of Concept
Lay summary
Project Aims:
This project aims to test the linkage between mental health data from MerseyCare and primary care data by attempting to:
a) Supplement the medication and diagnoses data in the mental health data with GP data. The proportion of patients whose diagnoses and medication data have been supplemented from the primary care data will be generated.
(ii) Validate/assess the quality of existing medication and diagnoses data in the mental health tables. Quality checks will be performed, where possible, on any pre-existing or extracted medication and diagnoses data in the mental health data.

Scientific Rationale:
Future population health and research projects will depend upon being able to determine groups of patients by diagnoses or medications being prescribed. It is therefore critical that these fields are being captured as completely and reliably as possible. Diagnoses and medication data come in two data types in the mental health data; structured data (this data is tabulated in specific fields) and unstructured data (this data is in a free text field). The structured data contain incomplete diagnosis data with most diagnoses being captured in unstructured data. The structured medication data only comprehensively describe medications that were prescribed by mental health services operated by MerseyCare. Again, most of the prescribing information is captured in narrative form in unstructured text. This is because in most cases, MerseyCare professionals direct the patients' own GPs to prescribe the required medications, and this is communicated through routine correspondence which is captured in unstructured data.

Project duration:
The duration of this project should be 3-6 months.
Public benefit statement
This project is pivotal to improve the service users’ access to clinical trials, enhancing the inclusiveness and generalisability of trials. We anticipate that it will have a direct impact on mental health data quality, resulting in higher quality research and population health projects, and thereby leading to improvements in healthcare for patients in the NHS.
